What If I Break My Dentures?

Dentures are delicate by nature. Made from acrylic resin and sometimes porcelain, these appliances are vulnerable to breaks, cracks, and chipping. Whether you’ve dropped your dentures in the sink or the teeth or clasps have loosened over time, Direct Denture Care can perform denture repairs when you need them. Learn more about emergency denture repairs in this blog post!

How Do Dentures Break?

Dentures can break in a number of ways. Despite your best efforts, you may drop them while inserting, removing, or cleaning them. If you’re overdue for a denture reline, they may fracture beneath the pressure of a poor fit. If you have a dog, they may compromise your dentures the same way they chew your shoes.

Sometimes, dentures simply break from wear. While you can trust new cosmetic dentures to perform at their peak, old faithfuls may be more prone to structural failures due to years of daily use and stress. Sometimes, it’s an easy fix, such as a loose artificial tooth — or perhaps a loose clasp, if you wear partial dentures. Other times, you’re looking at a full fracture.

What Not to Do

If your dentures are broken, don’t try to fix them yourself. While DIY denture repair kits exist, using them usually does more harm than good. When a non-professional tries their hand at denture repair, they usually exacerbate the damage, to the point where they’ll need new dentures. Many of these DIY kits also don’t pass the sniff test with us, as they can contain harsh chemicals that you shouldn’t put in your mouth.

How Direct Denture Care Can Help

At Direct Denture Care, we don’t just make dentures and custom-made mouthguards. We also offer denture maintenance services, including relining and repairing. When you break your dentures, you want them fixed as soon as possible — and that’s why we offer same-day denture repair. So long as you book an appointment, a dental prosthetist should be with you fairly quickly; please note there may be a wait for walk-ins.

The Repair Process

When the dental prosthetist finally has your appliance in their possession, they will assess its condition and take measurements of your mouth. Once they know the extent of the damage, they will advise you of the estimated repair time frame. In most cases, the repair process shouldn’t take longer than an hour, but dentures in particularly poor condition may need more time than average.

What happens next depends on the nature of the fracture or break. Often, the dental prosthetist will make a mould of the damaged dentures to ensure they have a template while performing the repairs. They will usually resolve the breaks by applying special adhesives or bonding materials (usually fresh acrylic) to the dentures’ affected areas. Alternatively or additionally, they may also replace compromised prosthetic teeth or clasps. Once the dental prosthetist has completed all major fixes, they will cure the dentures before giving them a final trim and polish. Your false teeth will be good as new again faster than you can say ‘immediate dentures’!

Got Broken Dentures?

Even the most diligent denture wearers may require repair services from time to time. Accidents can happen, and general wear is inevitable — especially for an appliance built to endure stress every day of its life.

Whether you’ve chipped a prosthetic tooth or your dentures are completely unwearable, Direct Denture Care is here at the ready with efficient emergency denture repair services. Be sure to book an appointment to avoid wait times and ensure our dental prosthetist attends to your dentures as soon as they possibly can.
