What Is Denture Relining?

Denture relining is the process of modifying a denture’s tissue-facing surface to improve its fit and comfort. While soft relining allows for minor, shorter-term adjustments, hard relining involves more significant modifications with longer-lasting results. That said, temporary relining is sometimes all you need, especially if you’re in the first three to six months of healing following tooth extraction. As your gums and bone shrink and undergo intense structural changes, we offer immediate dentures, which often require a temporary or soft reline within the first three months.

Is it worth getting dentures relined? Yes, because the shape of your mouth is constantly changing. If you’re wondering, ‘How often should I have a denture reline?’, the recommended timeline is every two to three years.

Denture Relining in 3 Steps

Step 1: Making an Impression

Hard relining (and sometimes soft relining) requires an impression of your gum. To take an impression, a denturist places soft material (usually PVS or silicone) inside the denture, against the tissue-facing surface. They then place the denture in your mouth so you can gently bite down, creating a negative mould of your gum.

Step 2: 3D Modelling

Once we have the impression, the next step is to create a three-dimensional model of your gum. The denturist creates the model from dental stone, using your denture and freshly formed impression to make an exact replica of your upper or lower arch. The dental stone must be set before the denturist can add relining material to your denture.

Step 3: Adding the Relining Material

Finally, the denturist can remove the denture from the model and pour the relining material onto its tissue-facing surface. If you’re getting a hard reline, this material will be acrylic resin; if you’re getting a soft reline, this material will either be acrylic- or silicone-based.

To solidify the reline, the denturist will either hot-cure or cold-cure your entire denture. Your relining is now complete!

When to Skip Steps & Change Up the Process

Denture ReliningRelining can deviate from the three steps described above. For example, soft relining doesn’t always require a model — sometimes, the relining material (rather than the PVS or silicone) goes directly onto the denture to collect the gum impression. The denturist will trim and polish the denture once it’s set, which is a much quicker process — and sometimes all that is necessary, especially during the healing process.

Temporary relines don’t require a model at all, and they utilise tissue conditioners rather than acrylic- or silicone-based materials. They also don’t require curing, as tissue conditioners are usually self-setting. These relines last only days or weeks and are used to stabilise dentures during healing or infection, rather than facilitate long-term adjustments.

Partial Denture Relines

In the case of partial denture relines, the process demands even closer attention to detail. Partial dentures have metal clasps that could distort if they touch the relining materials, especially during curing or setting. Furthermore, the impression and model will replicate natural teeth as well as gum tissue, so a precise fit will be even more critical.

How Much Does a Denture Reline Cost in Perth?

In Perth, a full denture relining service can cost anywhere from $320 to $600, and partial denture relines can cost $300 or more. If you need both upper and lower denture relines, you should budget closer to the $600 mark. Bear in mind that prices will vary by clinic, and that the type of material you choose can add $100–200 to the price.

At Direct Denture Care, we offer a variety of payment options, and you’re always welcome to ask us for a cost estimate. Most health funds (and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs) also offer a rebate every two years, though this may vary at the discretion of the dental professional.
